Now time is short and a Non-US driver's license expires 180 days after entering the US. First step is to find a DMV ("Departement of Motor Vehicles", CA) that is close to you. It's better to make a appointment upfront to avoid joining the queue. This can be done by phone (real person, voice recognition system) or via internet due a 24/7 service. On evening before I did it thru the internet. So today I went straight to "Window 10". After providing all personal data (true name/birthname, address, type of license) you'll get the DL-44 form to fill out it. Don't be confused: you'll be asked about some history facts (denied licenses, conflicts with law) and later you come to the section about "Organ and Tissue Donor". If you answer "YES" your name would be recorded on a list for this issue and you'll get a pink seal on your drive's license that marks you for your availability to donor. Otherwise you can spend $2.00 on a voluntary basis to support this project. Next station is Window 17 where you get the "California Driver's Examination". To be prepared for this test you should read the California Driver's Handbook prior you take it. I passed this test of 30 Questions with 3 minor faults. Your answers are checked by the agent of "Windows 17". As I passed she (the representative) was asking me for my german license to label it as "NOT VALID IN CALIFORNIA". In the meantime until I pass the practically driver's test for the "real" driver's license I have a "Temporary Driver's License Class C" for driving. Today overall the whole procedure took roughly 1 hr. to proceed. My car driver's test is scheduled for 02-AUG06 - we'll see....
